GNPC Promotes Environmental Stewardship Through Tree Planting at John Bosco R/C Basic School in Tema

In commemoration of World Environment Day (WED), the Health, Safety, Security & Environment (HSSE) Department of the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) organized a tree planting exercise at John Bosco R/C Basic School in Tema.

The event saw the participation of officials from the HSSE department, members of the Eco-Innovations Advisory Committee of GNPC’s Senior Staff Union (SSU), as well as the School's Heads, Administrators, and Students.

Explaining the purpose of the initiative, HSSE Manager Mr. Samuel Addoteye highlighted the importance of raising environmental awareness among students, encouraging them to engage actively in combating climate change. He emphasized the collective responsibility in protecting the environment, underscoring the significance of safeguarding the planet's health and vitality for future generations.

Addressing this year’s theme, “Land Restoration, Desertification, and Drought Resilience,” Mr. Victor Sunu-Attah, General Manager of Engineering at GNPC, stressed the urgent need to protect and restore ecosystems for the benefit of both people and nature. “It is essential that we all take action now to protect the earth and its precious natural resources,” he added. Mr. Sunu-Attah also encouraged students to learn about environmental issues, engage in discussions, and advocate for policies that protect our planet.

To foster a new generation of environmental stewards, Samuel Addoteye and the HSSE team inaugurated 'the Green Team' at John Bosco R/C Basic School. This team is tasked with the crucial role of promoting sustainable environmental practices within the school and their local communities.

The day concluded with the planting of several trees, symbolizing GNPC’s commitment to advancing the goals of World Environment Day.

On behalf of the school, Headmistress Madam Margareth Alu expressed her heartfelt gratitude to GNPC and the HSSE team for selecting their school for the initiative. She assured them of their commitment to caring for the newly planted trees.

GNPC remains dedicated to its environmental mission, striving to create a greener, healthier future for all. The tree planting initiative aligns with the United Nations’ goal to reduce CO2 emissions by half by 2030 and mitigate temperature rises in Ghana.
