GNPC Commemorates International Women’s Day 2025 with a Focus on Empowerment and Leadership

The Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) celebrated International Women’s Day 2025 with a distinguished event themed “Empowering GNPC Women: Leading with Excellence in Ghana’s Petroleum Sector.” Held on March 8, 2025, at the Alisa Hotel in Tema, the event showcased GNPC’s ongoing commitment to promoting gender diversity and advancing women’s leadership within the energy industry.

In his keynote address, GNPC CEO Kwame Ntow Amoah highlighted the Corporation’s proactive approach to gender equity. “Empowerment is a priority at GNPC, especially in supporting women in STEM to assume leadership roles,” he stated. Acknowledging trailblazers such as Mrs. Amoako Mensah, Madam Esther Cobbah, Doe Agbolosoo Mensah, and Eugenia Fefoame, he underscored their contributions to the sector while emphasizing the need for ongoing investment in training and the creation of opportunities to enhance women’s impact further.

Dr. Angela Dwamena-Aboagye, Executive Director of the Ark Foundation, delivered a compelling address on the necessity of affirmative action to dismantle systemic barriers in the petroleum industry. She advocated for intentional policies that transcend symbolic gestures, urging institutions to prioritize mentorship and sponsorship to cultivate female leadership. “True progress requires deliberate action to ensure women are not just present but influential at decision-making levels,” she asserted.

The event featured a professional development session led by Afua Amankwah Sarkodie, a renowned personal branding expert, titled “Navigating Corporate Success with Grace and Style.” Ms. Sarkodie stressed the importance of self-confidence, strategic positioning, and continuous skill development as critical drivers of career advancement. She encouraged women to leverage their unique strengths, build robust professional networks, and assertively pursue leadership opportunities.

GNPC’s Senior Staff Association (SSA) further demonstrated its commitment to gender equity by honoring female managers for their leadership contributions. SSA President Eric Asare urged male allies to actively champion workplace inclusivity, stating, “Talent must thrive irrespective of gender, and dismantling traditional barriers is a collective responsibility.”

A panel discussion, moderated by Mrs. Jennifer Boateng, explored “Breaking Barriers, Affirmative Action, and Women in Leadership in Ghana’s Energy Sector.” Panelists, including Angela Hohoabu (Manager, Legal, GNPC), Dr. Kwame Baah Nuakoh (General Manager, Strategy & Investment), and Dr. Dwamena-Aboagye, offered actionable insights on enhancing gender diversity, addressing industry challenges, and driving policy reforms for greater inclusion.

The event reaffirmed GNPC’s resolve to champion gender equality through a supportive ecosystem that enables women to excel. Mr. Amoah concluded, “Empowering women is not merely a corporate goal—it is a shared imperative that strengthens our industry and society.” This commitment positions GNPC as a leader in fostering an equitable future for Ghana’s petroleum sector.
