GNPC and Shell Deliberate on LNG, Solar, and Exploration Initiatives to Boost Ghana’s Energy Sector
The Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) and Shell Energy Ghana have engaged in discussions to bolster Ghana’s energy security through strategic initiatives in liquefied natural gas (LNG) supply, renewable energy expansion, and deepwater exploration. A recent meeting between GNPC's Chief Executive Officer, Hon. Edward Abambire Bawa, and Shell Energy Ghana’s Managing Director and Country Chair, Brian Muriuki, underscored the shared commitment to collaborative efforts in advancing Ghana’s oil and gas sector.
Shell Energy Ghana, a major participant in the LNG supply industry since 2019, gave an update on its thermal LNG project, highlighting that it is 99% complete. The delegation emphasized Shell’s dedication to enhancing energy security in Ghana, a crucial scheme given the recent spikes in global energy prices triggered by the repercussions of COVID-19 and geopolitical tensions worldwide.
Discussions further delved into Shell’s 20% stake in the West Africa Gas Pipeline and the company's strategic initiatives to secure additional gas supplies for Ghana. Recognizing the pivotal role of natural gas in providing stable and cost-effective energy solutions for the nation, both parties expressed mutual appreciation for the significance of this energy source.
In alignment with its commitment to sustainability, Shell spotlighted its 15-megawatt solar energy project in Ghana and outlined plans for expanding investments in renewable energy. The company expressed a keen interest in forging partnerships with key stakeholders to foster energy affordability and bolster Ghana’s transition towards a diversified energy portfolio.
Despite the global push towards energy diversification, Shell underscored the enduring importance of hydrocarbons in meeting Ghana’s energy requirements. The company also signaled its interest in deepwater exploration endeavors in Ghana, disclosing preliminary discussions with the Petroleum Commission. Shell exuded confidence in Ghana’s hydrocarbon potential and positioned the country as an attractive investment destination for upstream ventures.
Hon. Edward Bawa lauded Shell’s reinvigorated focus on deepwater exploration, deeming it a favorable development for Ghana’s upstream sector. He reiterated GNPC’s unwavering commitment to collaborating with industry partners to optimize the nation’s hydrocarbon reserves in an environmentally responsible manner.
“Gas represents a pivotal avenue for Ghana to fully harness and maximize the value of its hydrocarbon assets,” Hon. Bawa affirmed. “GNPC recognizes the imperative for increased gas supply to meet the country’s growing energy needs and remains aligned with the government’s vision of fostering a conducive environment for key industry stakeholders to invest in the sector.”
In conclusion, both entities reaffirmed their dedication to fostering a collaborative partnership as GNPC and Shell embark on transformative initiatives aimed at fortifying LNG supply, expanding renewable energy investments, and propelling sustainable oil and gas exploration initiatives in Ghana.
