AETC 2025: GNPC Spotlights Tech as a Catalyst for Energy Growth

Accra, Ghana - The Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) is advancing a dynamic vision centered on technological innovation, strategic partnerships, and robust local content development to propel Ghana's energy sector. This strategy, underscored at various recent industry forums, including the Africa Energy Technology Conference (AETC 2025) held in Accra from May 27–29, aims to de-risk Ghana's hydrocarbon potential, attract significant investment, and ensure an equitable and just energy transition for the continent.

Representing GNPC's CEO, Michael Aryeetey, Managing Director of GNPC’s subsidiary Explorco, emphasized the nation's readiness for "bold partnerships, enabled by data, driven by technology, and guided by smarter, more efficient ways of working." This approach is pivotal for unlocking Ghana's full energy potential, with a call to reimagine exploration strategies through the adoption of advanced technologies, he asserted.

A cornerstone of this strategy is the extensive de-risking of the Voltaian Basin, Ghana's significant onshore frontier. GNPC has invested over USD 140 million in the acquisition of comprehensive seismic data, creating a more attractive and investor-ready landscape in a region traditionally viewed as high-risk. This initiative is a clear demonstration of GNPC's commitment to proactively developing Ghana's natural resources.

Beyond technological advancements in exploration, GNPC has stressed the critical importance of a stable and attractive regulatory environment. "What’s above ground, our regulatory stability, fiscal terms, and commitment to transparent practices, is what truly sets us apart in a competitive global market," Mr Aryeetey further noted, signaling a holistic approach to attracting meaningful investment that transcends subsurface potential.

A Unified Call for Energy Justice and African-Led Solutions

GNPC's strategic direction aligns with a broader call from African leaders for energy justice and a transition that prioritizes the continent's developmental needs. Hon. John Abdulai Jinapor, Ghana’s Minister for Energy and Green Transition, has been a vocal advocate for an equitable energy future, emphasizing that Africa must define its path out of energy poverty.

"Africa’s greatest resource is not what lies beneath the ground, but what walks amongst us," the Minister stated, underlining the need to empower the continent's youth and women in shaping the energy landscape. "We must define our pathway to liberate ourselves from energy poverty through science, through context, and unapologetically in our interests."

This sentiment was strongly echoed by the African Petroleum Producers’ Organisation (APPO). H.E. Dr. Omar Farouk Ibrahim, Secretary-General of APPO, highlighted the global imbalance in the energy transition narrative. "Africa contributes just 3% to global emissions, yet we are asked to abandon over 125 billion barrels of oil while millions of our people remain without energy access," Dr. Ibrahim pointed out. He argued that climate justice must evolve from financial pledges to tangible responsibility and action from the world's historical emitters.

Future Outlook: Collaboration, Capacity, and Courage

The collective messaging from GNPC and its continental partners signals a new era of self-determination in Africa's energy sector. The emphasis is on charting a unique course built on robust regional collaboration, knowledge and technology transfer, and the bold pursuit of energy security.

GNPC has expressed its support for APPO's initiatives to foster regional cooperation through shared research, the establishment of innovation centers, and concerted capacity-building efforts. These collaborations are particularly crucial as Ghana forges ahead with its ambitious onshore exploration in the Voltaian Basin, a project that stands to be a model for indigenous-led resource development. The overarching theme remains clear: Africa is moving beyond being a mere recipient of solutions to becoming the architect of its own sustainable and prosperous energy future.
